Our goal is simple. We want to educate and motivate Kansas City residents to increase the rate and amount of savings in order to build a sound financial future.

Currently, the national savings rate is a negative number. Most of us have forgotten how to save consistently and to use good saving strategies. Kansas City Saves believes that we can change that through our outreach efforts. We encourage residents to enroll as a Saver, and commit themselves to a savings goal. Get a job that counts — with the U.S. Census Bureau

The nationwide people-counting maneuver known as the 2010 Census has begun, and that’s good news in the middle of this bleak, job-sucking recession.

Uncle Sam needs your help.

Even though the counting is a year away, the U.S. Census Bureau must verify millions of addresses before it mails out the questionnaires in March 2010.

So the census bureau is hiring census takers to do that job, for $10 to $18 an hour.

KC’s red-light cameras become operational starting Saturday Feb, 21

Kansas City is about to put the pedal to the metal on its first red-light camera.

Beginning Saturday, red-light runners at 39th Street and Southwest Trafficway can expect to receive a letter in the mail with instructions on where they can send their $100 fine plus $13.50 in court costs. Visa and MasterCard will be accepted.

By the end of March, city officials say, cameras will be operating at five more high-traffic intersections.

The Fifth annual Bright Future Employment Fair to be March 16

Kansas City, Mo., residents ages 15-22 who are interested in paid positions (full-time, part-time, seasonal, etc.) can apply for the City of Kansas City, Mo., Bright Future Employment Fair until March 1 at http://www.kcmo.org/brightfuture.

The fifth annual employment fair is March 16 from 7:45 a.m. until noon at the Kansas City Convention Center, 301 W. 13th St.


Applicants will have the opportunity to be interviewed and immediately hired by the more than 90 companies and City departments. Nearly 3,000 young people have been employed in the four years of the program.

The employment fair is sponsored by the City, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, JE Dunn Construction Co., the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Channel 9 and Walton Construction.

The Youth Advocacy office strategically uses resources to focus on innovative initiatives directed toward young people in all fifteen school districts that draw students from Kansas City, Mo. More than 60 projects, initiatives and programs were instituted in 2008 translating an investment of return of $13.69 for every $1 spent toward young people in Kansas City.

Trash pick-up delayed, City offices closed Feb. 16

In observance of the President’s Day holiday Feb. 16, curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day and City of Kansas City, Mo., offices will be closed. The 3-1-1 Action Center, a division of the City Manager's Office, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents who usually have Monday collection will receive this service Tuesday, Feb. 17. Residents who usually have Friday collection will receive this service Saturday, Feb. 21.

This Saturday, people that have already made the choice to BE 1! -- mentors,
volunteers, advocates, teachers and parents of KCMSD scholars -- will be
stationed at branches of the Kansas City Public Library from 10am-3pm sharing

Kansas City residents should use stickers,
not dollars, for extra trash bags, officials say

Just in case there’s any doubt: Do not attach a dollar bill to your extra trash bags.

Kansas City officials spent much of last week talking about new fines for extra trash bags. Some had suggested that residents in a pinch might tape a dollar bill to a bag if they didn’t have the required sticker.

But by the end of the week, officials made it clear that Kansas City residents should stick to the official stickers.

The city’s policy is that after two free bags, a $1 sticker is required for each extra bag. The stickers are obtained from participating grocery and hardware stores.

Film series celebrates Black History Month

Film series celebrates Black History Month

Films about African-Americans are featured in the free film series “Our Heroes” in the Film Vault at the KC Central Library, 14 W. 10th. Programmed by area movie critic Shawn Edwards, the series screens at 6:30 p.m. Mondays and 1:30 p.m. Saturdays throughout February, Black History Month.

The schedule:

•“The Jackie Robinson Story” (Monday and Feb. 7): The man who broke baseball’s color barrier starred in his own movie biography.

•“Cornbread, Earl and Me” (Feb. 9 and 14): A 12-year-old Laurence Fishburne stars in this tale of a black community traumatized by the death of a local hero.

•“Greased Lightning” (Feb. 16 and 21): Richard Pryor stars as Wendell Scott, America’s first black race car driver.

•“The Great White Hope” (Feb. 23 and 28): James Earl Jones is Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champ.

In addition, Edwards will talk about “The Manifestation of the Black Hero on Screen” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the library.
Edwards’ new documentary, “Our Heroes: The 25 Best Black Sports Movies (Ever),” screens Feb. 28 at the Gem Theater.

The Paint Program provides free paint and supplies to eligible Kansas City, Mo., homeowners.

All labor is to be accomplished or provided by the homeowner. The house must prepared for painting before a voucher can be issued. City staff will perform an on site inspection of the property.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance

The Missouri Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has two components: Energy Assistance/Regular Heating (EA) and Energy Crisis Assistance Program (ECIP). EA is designed to provide financial assistance to help pay heating bills for Missourians during the months of October, November, December, January, February, and March.

Eligibility requirements for EA are based on income, family size, available resources and responsibility for payment of home heating costs. Eligibility for EA may also qualify individuals for additional financial assistance through ECIP and/or weatherization services funded by LIHEAP.

KC wants to keep track of vacant property

Kansas City is trying to get an inventory of all its vacant and foreclosed properties, especially in light of the recent mortgage crisis.

The City Council’s Housing Committee today endorsed a proposal to require that properties vacant for more than 120 days be registered with the city. The measure goes to the full council on Feb. 5 for a vote.

“This is driven by the fact that many vacant properties are not well-maintained,” Councilman John Sharp said.

U.S. Census Bureau job testing available at Mohart Center

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Neighborhood and Community Services Department is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to provide employment testing for census jobs.

The employment testing will take place at the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose FOCUS Center every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-5:30 p.m. until staffing needs are met.
The Mohart Center is located at 3200 Wayne Ave. and is operated by the Human Services Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department. Applicants are asked to park in the free parking lot at 33rd and Flora streets and enter through the center's south doors.

"We are very pleased to be able to provide space for the census bureau staff in our facility for these testing sessions," said Jackie Powell, manager of the Human Services Division. "It is critical that an accurate count of residents is taken during the census because the numbers reported eventually determine the number of federal representatives we have and how much federal funding our community receives."

As you may know, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department has a Community Involvement Task Force in all six patrol divisions.
The one at Metro Patrol has been working on several projects, one of which is to help in the reporting of dump sites throughout Metro.
I advise you to contact me if you have information on a suspect in the illegal dumping. The task force has decided to go a step further and is asking you to contact me if you have a site where illegal dumping is a common occurrence, so the task force can notify the city department responsible for the cleanup. Hopefully this will aid in a timely cleanup. Thank you for your time and the time you spend keeping your neighborhoods a safe place.

For the second year, the City of Kansas City, Mo., Youth Advocacy Office, a division of the City Manager’s Office, will help administer a scholarship grant program funded by The Port Authority of Kansas City, Mo., and area casino gaming operators.

The scholarships will serve city residents living in households that have a total annual income of 80 percent or less of the median income of city households.

Company offers free house painting job for needy local family

College Works Painting would like to offer a free exterior paint job valued at about $3,000 to a needy local family. College Works Painting has painted hundreds of local houses and would like to give back to the community and is asking you to nominate a local family that could use some sprucing up around the house.

We value the Kansas City Metro community and want an opportunity to give back. We will also be training employees during the process of painting the home over spring break to ensure quality standards from our team this summer. We will provide high quality of materials, insurance, workers comp and a warranty on the work completed.

City Hall: ordinances being heard Jan7th

There are two ordinances being heard tomorrow. CCO organizers will be present, however we would like for you to be there, especially ordinance 081277 being heard at 3:00pm.


True Vine Missionary Baptist Church had an action on December 11th and requested lender licensing be supported and Councilwoman Cindy Circo and City Staff rep David Parks both agreed to support an ordinance that would Stop the Blight. We requested that elected officials should require in the early process of foreclosures that Lenders register their property. We believe this will give the consumer time to modify their loan and it notifies the city of information needed to ensure the property is maintained while owned by the lender. Lender registration is needed just like landlord registration is needed.


The other ordinance being heard Jan.7th at 8:15am will be designating approximately $75,000.00 to hire community organizers and $75,000.00 to hire a consultant to look at economic development in Kansas City ’s most distressed areas.

In observance of the Christmas holiday on Dec. 25, curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day and City of Kansas City, Mo., offices will be closed. The 3-1-1 Action Center, a division of the City Manager's Office, also will be closed.

Residents who usually have Thursday collection will receive this service Friday, Dec. 26. Residents who usually have Friday collection will receive this service Saturday, Dec. 27.

The period after Christmas, Dec. 26-31, also is a “no tag” period for trash collection in the City. During this time, residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags. This is done to accommodate the extra trash that is usually accumulated at this time. The Missouri Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has two components: Energy Assistance/Regular Heating (EA) and Energy Crisis Assistance Program (ECIP). EA is designed to provide financial assistance to help pay heating bills for Missourians during the months of October, November, December, January, February, and March.

Eligibility requirements for EA are based on income, family size, available resources and responsibility for payment of home heating costs. Eligibility for EA may also qualify individuals for additional financial assistance through ECIP and/or weatherization services funded by LIHEAP.

Flu shots Wednesday at KCI

Kansas City International Airport will host a flu shot clinic on Wednesday.

The shots will be available on a first-come first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:

■ Terminal A – Gates 12-14, between the ticket counter and baggage claim

■ Terminal B – Gates 45-50, by the Southwest Airlines baggage claim #2 and 3

■ Terminal C – Gate 78, by the restrooms between the CNBC News/Gifts and Starbucks.

Flu vaccines will be available for those age 3 years and older for $10 per shot. Cash or credit will be accepted. For those who provide proof of coverage, the Health Department will bill Medicare Part A or B or Missouri Medicaid on their behalf.

McCaskill Staff To Discuss DTV Transition with Constituents at “Kitchen Table Talk” In Jackson County

Senator’s staff set to meet with area residents

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Over the past year, members of U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill’s staff have regularly traveled throughout the state to hear from local residents. As we approach the end of the transition to digital television (DTV) on February 17, 2009, staff members announce today a series of “Kitchen Table Talks” specifically aimed at informing Missourians about the DTV transition. The purpose of these Kitchen Table Talks is to inform Missouri residents about the government-provided resources available to them as they transition to the new system. Missourians should also feel free to talk to the McCaskill staff members about other issues important to them.

As part of the transition, all analog televisions not connected to cable, satellite, or a digital converter box will go dark on February 17, 2009. Americans, especially senior citizens, depend on television programming to provide them with important information, including weather alerts, emergency information, and breaking news. Without taking action, over 400,000 Missouri households will not be able to receive a TV signal when they wake up on February 17.


“It’s always important that I hear Missourians’ opinions on the issues affecting out state, but I also want to reach out to people to make sure they understand what the government can do for them. The DTV transition is something that will affect thousands of Missourians, and too few are prepared for it. We need to get the word out about how the government can help,” McCaskill said.

The federal government is sponsoring a coupon program that will provide two $40 vouchers to help Americans purchase converter boxes for their analog television sets, which range in price between $40 and $60. Consumers must request their coupons, and already over 20 percent of coupons available for distribution have been distributed. To find out more about the transition or order a coupon, the public can call 1-888-DTV-2009 or visit dtv2009.gov.



Kitchen Table Talks were originally conceived as a way to give constituents an opportunity to provide McCaskill with feedback on the issues affecting Missouri families. The events also give residents a chance to learn how their senator’s office can assist constituents on a range of federal government issues. People attending the Kitchen Table Talks are welcome to bring their ideas and concerns about any issues facing Missouri and the country. Staff members at each Kitchen Table Talk document their input, and report directly to McCaskill.

In Kansas City’s Brookside shopping district, the celebration of the holiday season continues on Thursday, December 4 at 6 p.m. with the annual tree lighting ceremony.

Emergency Home Repair Program to stop accepting applications Dec. 1

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Property Preservation Division is reminding residents that applications for this cycle of the Emergency Home Repair Program are due Dec. 1. Applications for this reformatted version of the Minor Home Repair Program were accepted starting Aug. 1.

"We set up the August to December application time in anticipation of receiving enough applications to use the funding we have. The public will be notified when applications are available for the next cycle," said Bob Jackson, manager of the Property Preservation Division. This division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department administers the Emergency Home Repair Program, Home Weatherization Program, Municipal Court Fund Program (referral only) and Paint Program.

Kansas City, Mo., homeowners who are in urgent need of roofing, plumbing, electrical and mechanical work, and who meet program requirements are eligible to apply for the Emergency Home Repair Program. However, program managers caution applicants that the funding for this cycle is likely to cover only the eligible applications that already have been processed.

Eligible applicants are homeowners who own only one property, have not received assistance from this program (the old Minor Home Repair Program) since Sept. 30, 1993, and meet these household income guidelines:

- One person - $23,950

- Two people - $27,350

- Three people - $30,800

- Four people - $34,200

- Five people - $36,960

- Six people - $39,650

- Seven people - $42,400

- Eight people - $45,150.

"Approved applicants receive a single service of urgent need and the repair will be made by a contractor who meets our more clearly defined list of responsibilities. The work provided by this program is 'emergency' in the sense that it is not routine maintenance and will proceed as quickly as possible," Jackson said.

A Community Development Block Grant established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the Emergency Home Repair Program.

The University of Kansas Hospital will provide free flu shots at a drive-through event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8.

No appointment is necessary. Those attending must be 18 or older. The shot will not be given to anyone who is allergic to eggs or suffering from a cold or fever at the time.

Women who are or may be pregnant should check with their doctor. Other restrictions may apply.

Those interested should drive to 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard and follow the signs. Although shots are free, the hospital will accept donations of nonperishable food for Harvesters.

“Late October to early November is the best time of year for a flu vaccination,” according to William Barkman, pulmonary and critical care doctor and chief of staff at the hospital.
