City. However, if we don't act before September
9th, we will lose out on something that could make our neighborhood more
liveable. Right now, we need 10% of
our combined neighborhoods to pre-register before September 9th. We are aware that some of our neighbors presently don't even have
computers or internet service. We have people, including Google, who
are willing to help us overcome that. We need you to not only
pre-register, but to help spread the word.

community to get the fastest Internet in the country -- and to realize
the benefits of gigabit Internet
we need to work together. I
am in direct contact with the Google Fiber Team, and I am working with
them to find ways to get messaging to our communities. There

Google unveils pricing, rollout strategy for high-speed Internet service
Want Google Inc.’s lightning speed Internet service? Start lobbying your neighbors.
The California tech giant announced today
that its network of high-capacity fiber optic lines strung directly to
homes will land first in neighborhoods where large numbers of customers
agree to buy the service — and put up money in advance.
Bundled
with TV service, it will sell for $120 a month — Internet service alone
for $70 a month. And people who want much slower but conventional
broadband can get it for free if they pay a $300 connection fee.

Tornado Siren Test July 4th
The City of Kansas City, Mo. Office of Emergency Management reminds the
public that the City will test its tornado siren system per its routine
schedule, which is the first Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. This
month, the first Wednesday takes place on Wednesday, July 4,
Independence Day. The test will last three minutes.

June 8th Free event at KC Public Library
A mischievous, funny, and imaginative child discovers he can make his dream world a reality.
That's the premise of local author/illustrator Shane Evans' 2009 children's book Olu's Dream. Now his tale has become a stage musical receiving its world premiere on Friday, June 8, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.
Olu's Dream: The Musical features a book, music, and lyrics by Evans, who co-directs with local actress Dianne Yvette.
Among those bringing Olu's tale to life are members of the Kansas City Boys & Girls Choirs and area musicians.
Little Olu lives in
London, attends an international school, and comes from a diverse
background (African father/Asian mother). Inspired by his father's art,
Olu and his friends embark on a series of adventures that span the
universe - adventures that remind us of our own potential to dream and
to make those dreams come true.
Olu's Dream: The Musical
is a co-production of the Dream Studio, a community art space operated
by Evans, and the True Light Resource Center, an outreach program of the
Church of the Nazarene.
"True Light is just
across the street from the Dream Studio," Evans said, "and Pastor Alice
Piggee-Wallace of True Light allowed me to go through them to apply for
a grant from the Francis Family Foundation. We not only got one, but a
second grant a year later.
"The grants gave me a mental go-ahead. They said it was a worthwhile thing to push this production as a community effort."
Though his major
emphasis has been on illustrating books for children, Evans has been
writing music since his teens. The score for Olu's Dream, he said, was heavy on world music influences, especially African music.
"This could have been a
one-man show," Evans said, "but I see it now as being about inclusion,
bringing together different groups and institutions and individuals.
It's about bringing the community together for a night."
Shane Evans is an
artist, author, illustrator, musician, songwriter, and founder of Dream
Studio, a community art space in Kansas City. He has illustrated more
than 30 books, including the Shanna series which has been
turned into a Disney animated short. Evans has exhibited, lectured, and
developed art programs for youth in Burkina Faso, Botswana, Brazil,
China, France, Japan, Lesotho, and across the United States. His most
recent book is Chocolate Me! created with actor and friend Taye Diggs.

Diversity Scholarship Program
The
Diversity Scholarship Program (DSP) supports and strengthens the work
of diverse grassroots leaders by sharing with them a broad range of
preservation tools and networks. DSP provides financial assistance to
individuals from diverse social, economic, racial, ethnic and cultural
backgrounds to attend the National Preservation Conference. Scholarship
recipients and alumni also receive preservation news and training
resources, firsthand, throughout the year.
DSP
has welcomed over 1,100 participants to the program and has helped
enrich the overall Conference experience by incorporating diverse
perspectives in the Conference’s programming and providing opportunities
for conference attendees to learn from these dynamic community leaders.
The
National Trust seeks culturally diverse applicants whose attendance at
the Conference will benefit their communities and whose commitment to
historic preservation will be reinforced by their participation.
Recipients will have an opportunity to express their perspectives during
the Conference and to take advantage of National Trust programs after
the Conference.

85TH STREET BUS LINE BEGINS IN JULY
Just in case you haven’t already seen some of the signs being posted along 85th Street, Marlborough
residents will soon have bus access to Save-A-Lot at 85th & Holmes, businesses at 85th & Wornall,
and the Ward Parkway Shopping Center at 85th & State Line effective July 1st.

The 85th Street bus line will also help those wanting to connect with other bus routes, such as Troost,
to access the Swope South Health Clinic at 89th & Troost.
These route changes were made possible by a comprehensive study that allowed
residents to make their voices heard. Over 700 comments were received
on existing bus service that led to these changes.
Some of the route involved includes:
· Route 54 Armour Paseo: Route 54’s southern end will change to provide new service between 85th St. & The Paseo to Ward Parkway Center.
Service at 85th & Prospect will be replaced by Route 175.
Service levels will be adjusted to better match demand: less rush hour service, but twice as much midday service.
· Route 175: Route 175 will be realigned to serve 85th & Prospect
and replace Route 54 service realigned to Ward Parkway Center.
Service to Overland Park will remain.· Troost Max Green Line: Troost MAX will provide service between downtown
and Bannister & Drury on weekdays and weekends, and will replace 25 Troost weekend
service to Bannister & Drury.
· 25 Troost:
To match weekday service, Route 25 weekend service will operate between downtown
and 83rd & Troost.

Free paint available for eligible City homeowners
Participants may choose paint colors and receive other supplies
Warmer weather signals the start of many things - one of which is the City of Kansas City, Mo., Paint Program. In 2011, this program provided free paint and supplies to more than 300 homeowners.
"This program helps improve our neighborhoods by assisting homeowners who need a little help with the upkeep of their property," said Doug Bossert, section manager of the Housing and Human Services Division, which manages the Paint Program. "Qualified homeowners receive high-quality exterior paint for their homes at no cost."
Eligible residents must complete an application to receive paint, primer, caulking and other supplies related to the painting of their home. Please note, the total cost of the paint supplies cannot exceed $500. Applicants must also:
- Reside in Kansas City, Mo.
- Own and live in the property to be painted
- Own only one property
- Meet these household income guidelines:

Women's Self Defense Seminar
The
focus of the training is on the importance of awareness, prevention,
streetwise precaution and most importantly, self defense. This training
is both lecture and hands-on. Physical activity is encouraged, but not
required.
Participants are asked to wear athletic type clothing, with no buttons or zippers. Socks and long sleeve shirts are required.
Enrollment
is open to females 16 years of age or older; however, anyone under the
age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The course is free, but you MUST pre-register. This course is limited to 50 participants.
The June 2, 2012 session will be held at the Police Athletic League gym (P.A.L.) at 1801 White Avenue from 8 am until noon.
The July 14, 2012 session will be held at the Regional Police Academy, 6885 NE Pleasant Valley Rd., from 8 am till noon.
We
are hoping to host the August 4, 2012 session at the new South Patrol
Complex gymnasium, located at Bannister Rd. and Marion Park Drive. In
the event the campus is not completed, this session will be moved to the
P.A.L. gym located at 1801 White.

To get information to the community as quickly as possible, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department is launching a text message alert system with Nixle.
Nixle Connect allows the department to instantly inform residents of current public safety issues via text/SMS, e-mail, Internet posts, and Twitter. The service is provided at no cost to the department, taxpayers, or residents.
Communications from the KCPD will range from emergency alerts such as Amber Alerts and critical incidents to routine day-to-day information such as violent crime suspects being sought, a burglary pattern, a major traffic incident, or other relevant information to residents.
"With Nixle, citizens can be aware of the current safety issues in their neighborhood," Chief Darryl Forté said. "Informed citizens can be our eyes and ears, helping us solve and prevent crime."
Kansas City residents can sign up to receive free, real-time safety information by texting their zip code or "KCPD" to 888777 or by visiting www.nixle.com <http://www.nixle.com/> . Once registered, users can customize the types of alerts they wish to receive via text, email, and online. Any information users submit is housed on secure Nixle servers and remains anonymous to police staff.
"Additionally, Kansas City will play host to the 2012 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game in July," continued Forté. "Nixle Connect provides us with a way to communicate with the tens of thousands of baseball fans who will be attending to keep traffic and people flowing as smoothly as possible, as well as a means to deliver any urgent messages should an emergency arise."

and New Reflections will be holding two rain barrel workshops - one is
this Saturday from 9 - 11 am at the home of April Bradshaw; the second

April 10th:Marlborough Plaza Fountain kick off
We are pleased that the Marlborough Plaza Fountain at 79th & Paseo has been chosen as the kick-off location for the 2012 Kansas City Fountain Day. Fountain Day is when all the fountains in Kansas City are turned on for the season. Please join us at 11:00 a.m. on April 10th for this celebration!
We'll also be celebrating the new renovations at the fountain. This fountain, formerly known as the "Boy and Fish Fountain" was the first one on the Country Club Plaza in 1923. When the Seville Fountain replaced it in 1969, it was moved to 79th & Paseo location, which is the most southern location for a KC fountain. In 2010, the Coalition petitioned the Parks Board to rename the "79th & Paseo Fountain" to the present name of the "Marlborough Plaza Fountain," giving a nod to both its previous home as well as its present.
We hope to see you at 11:00 a.m. on April 10th when "our" fountain, as well as the others in the city will be turned on!

Free Exhibit: Fashions of the Titanic Era
A “Fashions of the Titanic Era” exhibit will be on display at the Kansas City Museum through September 3, 2012. Admission is free.
The exhibit features 36 historic fashions and accessories owned by Kansas City residents during the Edwardian period. You’ll also learn about notable events and happening in Kansas City during the year of Titanic’s fateful voyage (1912).
The Kansas City Museum is located at 3218 Gladston Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri.
Free Pet Vaccinations: March 17th and March 24th
The free vaccination clinics will serve up to 1,000 pets coordinated on a first-come, first- serve basis. Attendees will receive a number upon arrival, with the final number being handed out within 15 minutes of the clinic closing. There are no income or residential restrictions. General wellness appointments will not be available during the free vaccination clinics on March 17th and 24th.
Generous funding from the ASPCA will support the two free vaccination clinics from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, March 17th and Saturday, March 24th. Clinics will be held at the Heartland SPCA Animal Medical Center at 5428 Antioch Dr. Merriam, KS 66202. Free vaccinations will also be administered to pets receiving the gift of spay/neuter surgery during the month of March.

- help is just around the corner!
Kansas City Community Gardens (KCCG) provides
self-help and educational assistance for their members to grow their own food.
Membership is $2 or $10
(depending on income) and it provides more benefits than
gardeners have zucchini in August, including:
* 10 packages of seeds (your choice)
* 1 bag of fertilizer (approx. 5lbs)
* Community gardening newsletter
* Discount on vegetable plants + additional seeds & fertilizer
* Tiller loan privilege
Membership also includes free attendance at high quality work-

and growing expertise gained from a KCCG membership provided you with more produce
than your family can use, the Ivanhoe Small Growers Market designed especially
for neighborhood gardeners, might be just for you.
New this year, the market will be held Fridays from 5:00 -7:00
pm at the Nutter Ivanhoe Neighborhood Center, 37th & Woodland, beginning June 8th
and ending September 28th. It costs $3/week to sell or $48 if you sign up for the entire season.

Free Brookside warm up St. Patrick's Day parade
This Saturday, March 10, 2012,the Brookside Shopping District in Kansas City is holding its 32nd Annual Brookside St. Patrick’s Day Warm Up Parade. Admission is free.
This event includes more than 100 parade entries (parade floats, bands, clowns, dogs, horses, and more).
The parade, which starts at 2:00 p.m., will begin at 65th and Wornall, go north to 63rd Street, east to Main Street, south to Meyer Boulevard, then west to Brookside Boulevard

The Free File Alliance
The Free File Alliance, a coalition of industry-leading tax software companies, has partnered with the IRS to create IRS Free File,a program that allows families with an Adjusted Gross Income of $57,000 or less to use their software to file their 2011 taxes electronically for free.
For people with higher incomes, there are online forms on the site that are designed for those who are comfortable preparing their own tax returns. So anyone can file electronically for free.
To take advantage of this offer, click here. Choose a tax software company (you can use their “help me find a company” tool to decide which one to use). You’ll then be directed to the company’s Web site where you can prepare, complete, and electronically file your federal income tax return for free. Some companies also support state tax returns.

Illegal dumping cameras: Help Identify two people
Remember when we said we were getting illegal dumping cameras? The neighborhood and the City are asking your help in identifying persons illegally dumping at 81st & Wabash at 2:38 pm on Friday, January 24th. Please see the link to pictures, below, to help identify them.
A series of seven images reveals a Dodge Ram pickup truck stopping on Wabash Avenue. Two men exited the vehicle and pulled picket fencing from the vehicle into the street. Image 0443 of the sequence is of sufficient resolution to allow a viewer to zoom in and see the faces of both individuals. The image 0443 is attached to this document along with a close-up from the image. Private Water Line Insurance
Recently, some area homeowners received letters of notices from private insurance companies offering an insurance program that covers the cost to repair a break or leak in their water service lines. If you haven't already received a letter or notice, you may receive a similar letter in the future. The insurance coverage being offered would be a private agreement between the company and the individual property owner.
This is not a program sponsored by Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department or the City of Kansas City. The City is not involved in and does not endorse any insurance for private water lines.
As a reminder, homeowners are responsible for the repair and maintenance of their water service lines as stated in City Ordinance Section 78-22, "The owner of the premises served shall maintain the water service against leakage from but not including the curb stop or fist shutoff valve to the premises served."
The Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department maintains and operates water collection, processing and distribution systems, stormwater management and control systems, and waste water collection and processing systems for residential and business customers in Kansas City and for wholesale customers in the Kansas City region. Trash delay & no tag week
In observance of the Christmas holiday, City of Kansas City, Mo., offices and the 311 Call Center will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26 and curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day. Residents who usually have Monday collection will receive the service on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Residents who usually have Friday collection will receive it on Saturday, Dec. 31.
Please be advised that Monday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Dec. 30 is a “no tag” period for trash collection in the City. During this time, residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags. This is done to accommodate the extra trash that is usually accumulated at this time of year. Residents are encouraged to utilize the City’s unlimited curbside recycling to dispose of cardboard and seasonal gift boxes. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE BULKY.

Crime Alert - Be Careful
This report is from a neighborhood to the west of ours', but contains good information as well as the reminder that we should be aware of our surroundings, especially during a time of year when we can easily be distracted.
The Armour Hills Board has received information of a personal assault and robbery that warrants significant concern. Please read the following incident description and report ANY suspicious behavior or vehicles that match the descriptions from the crime. As further information is available from KCPD, updates will be sent through email.
An Armour Hills resident was robbed, at gunpoint, in his driveway near 69th and Brookside Road on Saturday evening, December 17, at 8:00 p.m. He and his family were made to lay face down on the ground while the gunman demanded money, rummaged through his pockets, and made threats. Fortunately, no one was injured but the gunman got away with their wallets, identification, and credit cards.
The suspect is a mature black man, 5'-8" to 5'-10 and about 200 lbs, wearing black and covering his face with a black ski mask.
The vehicle was reportedly a red or pickup, likely a late 90's model Chevy or GMC Z-71, and was waiting around the corner, on Brookside Road. The robbery occurred on 69th, just east of Brookside Road. Red pickup truck… likely a late-90's model Chevy or GMC Z-71
KCPD responded, but the suspect had already left the area. The suspect attempted to use a credit card from a subsequent Prairie Village robbery to purchase gas. The card was denied but surveillance video shows the truck.
Please be extra vigilant when coming and going. Consider letting a neighbor know when you will be arriving to provide an additional set of eyes in your driveway.
Remember to call 911 if you see anything unusual. Nothing is too small - a parked running vehicle, walkers without pets that don't seem to know the area, etc.

FREE EYEGLASS CLINIC on Saturday, December 17th
There is also a FREE EYEGLASS CLINIC on Saturday, December 17th, 10am-2pm at Paseo Baptist Church, 2501 Paseo Boulevard, KCMO 64108. For additional inquiries call 816-921-6842.
This is open to everyone – no pre-qualifying required. The event consists of eye examinations and same-day distribution of eyeglasses.
They are not new glasses, but will be constructed on-site from donated glasses based on the individual’s eye exam results. The last time this event was held at the church almost 350 people received FREE eyeglasses!!! Can you imagine! Feel free to share this information.

Highlights from the 5th District Residents Meeting on
November 5th includes:
• Lots of investment going on in the 5th District.,
which includes the Target Green project.
• Redistricting—the map is very close to going to the
entire City Council for a vote.
• The City was awarded an EPA Reuse Grant on November 4th for the project at the former Municipal Farm, which will cleanup the brownfields
in that area and revitalize it for reuse.
There were several guests in attendance, including Mia Ward from Neighborhood Preservation, Kendra Mosley Ayuk from Legal Aid and Roosevelt Lyons, the Mayor’s Special Assistant for Community Affairs.
These meetings are held on a quarterly basis, and are
hosted by 5th District Councilman Michael Brooks and
5th District At-Large Councilwoman Cindy Circo.
Everyone is invited to attend.

NEW COMMANDER METRO DIVISION
Effective October 16th, Metro Patrol Division has a new Commander: Major Diane
Mozzicato. Mozzicato most recently served in the Information Services Division. In
June, she was chosen to serve on a panel named by County Prosecutor Jean Pe-
ters Baker that would discuss improvements to sharing evidence with attorneys of
criminal defendants.
Mozzicato has reserved November 30, from 5 pm to 7 pm for the community to
meet her and her command staff: Captains Crayon, Marckx, Jantzen and True.
Please make plans to attend this “meet and greet.” Metro Patrol Station Commu-
nity Room, 7601 Prospect. There will be light refreshments and snacks provided,
so stop in and introduce yourself.

Charles Brown thinks that more people should embrace
living east of Troost. After all,he does.
Brown grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, but now feels
at home in a house two blocks from Troost Avenue.
He says he loves the diversity of the people and the businesses nearby.

PK Steel Designs, a company that he co-owns with his
friend Jakob Goldman, he’s designing shirts which displays the names of main arteries familiar to those who travel on the eastside...Troost, Paseo and Prospect.

Senior Citizen Property Tax Credit
Certain senior citizens and 100% disabled individuals may be eligible for a Missouri income tax credit for a portion of their real estate taxes or rent paid for the year.
The credit is for a maximum of $750 for renters and $1,100 for owners who own and occupy their home. This credit can only be claimed on the home they occupy during the period being claimed. The actual credit is based on the amount of real estate taxes or rent paid and the total household income.
