KU Medical Center is hosting a free flu shot drive-through clinic for Kansas City area residents on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (while supplies last). The free flu shots will be given in the parking lot at Adams Street and Rainbow Boulevard (just east of 36th) in Kansas City, Kansas.

Anyone who is at least 18 years old is eligible for the free flu shot. Kids ages 8-17 can also get the shot with parental consent. The following people should not get a seasonal flu vaccination:

• People with Guillian Barre Syndrome
• Anyone who has a cold or fever
• People with severe egg allergies

No appointment is necessary. Although the flu shots are free, donations and non-perishable food items for Harvesters will be accepted.

However, the Center is also putting out a call for volunteers to help with the event. They need 5 volunteers to help set-up the games, cook hotdogs, work the welcome desk and help cleanup. Hour-long shifts are available to work, so it won't eat into your whole Saturday to help families have a little fun.

Residents invited to discuss violent crimes and murders at town hall forum

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Fifth District Councilman Michael Brooks invites residents to participate in a town hall forum on Friday, Oct. 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Robert J. Mohart Center, 3200 Wayne Ave. The forum will discuss local crime and violence, along with ways the community can get involved in decreasing it.

During the town hall, guest speaker Mayor Sly James will describe his vision to reduce violent crime in Kansas City, Mo. Both Mayor James and Councilman Brooks will answer questions residents have regarding crime in Kansas City.

Workshop topics include:

-- Purpose of the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund
-- Eligibility requirements (new requirements)
-- Funding requirements (new requirements)

-- Documentation required for consideration
-- Tips on preparing successful applications
-- Contract compliance
-- Reimbursement process

Eligible activities must be cultural, social, ethnic, historic, educational or recreational. Eligible organizations must meet these qualifications:

-- Is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Missouri
-- Has its registered office in the city limits of Kansas City, Mo.
-- Has neighborhood, community, tourism, promotion and development priorities as part of its mission
-- Meets the City's requirements for contracting with non-municipal agencies
-- Can thoroughly demonstrate it meets the program's eligibility requirements.

The application deadline for the annual consideration cycle is Oct. 15. Applications considered at this time are for events that will take place during the 2012-13 fiscal year, which begins May 1, 2012 and ends April 30, 2013. Applications are accepted year-round, however, many organizations choose to apply by Oct. 15, as more money is available for this funding cycle. The Neighborhood and Community Services Department manages the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.

Health Department urges timely back to school immunization

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department encourages parents and family members of school-age children to get their back to school immunizations now and not delay.

Missouri state law requires school districts to have satisfactory evidence on file indicating that students have been immunized or exempted from obtaining immunization in accordance with the laws of Missouri. Students without this documentation on file will not be allowed to attend school.

“Immunizations are a great tool to keep our students healthy throughout the school year, because any missed days impact their ability to learn,” said Carol Washington, school nurse coordinator for the Kansas City, Mo., School District.

Parents and guardians who bring their children to the Health Department’s Immunization Clinic will need to present a copy of their child’s shot records or a letter from the child’s school stating what shots are needed. If the child has previously had shots at the Health Department, parents and guardians may get a copy of the shot record when they register at the event.

“Elementary school students in the Kansas City, Mo., School District who get their immunizations and are present on the first day of classes will receive a backpack filled with school supplies provided by Heart to Heart International and other community partners,” said Washington.

Immunizations at the Health Department are free for children who have no insurance, who have limited insurance that does not cover immunization, or who are eligible for Medicaid’s Vaccine For Children program.

The Immunization Clinic is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m., and on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
