Father David Paisius Altschul began researching Troost Avenue more than 25 years ago and ultimately decided to document its history in the exhibit 200 Years on Troost.
Photographs and written commentary trace the history of Troost Avenue from its beginnings in 1808 to present day. Visitors will learn how the area transformed from the home of a 365-acre slave plantation in the 1830s to an upscale residential area in the late 1880s to a business hub in the early 1900s. The exhibit also chronicles the riots that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the new sense of community that exists today.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Emergency Management, has partnered with the National Weather Service and the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose FOCUS Center to offer a free storm spotter class on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 from 7-9 p.m.
Class will be held at the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose FOCUS Center (formerly the Linwood Multipurpose Center), 3200 Wayne Ave., Kansas City, Mo. The center has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and has secure off-street parking.
A National Weather Service meteorologist will teach participants to ‘read the sky’ to determine what type of severe weather is coming and will share important weather safety information that can help protect participants and the community from the hazards of severe weather.
“Storm spotters play a vital role in the warning and information process,” said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. “By observing storms and making reports back to the Emergency Operations Center and National Weather Service, they provide a valuable service. Residents are encouraged to get involved.”
For more than 60 years, storm spotters have been the nation’s first line of defense against deadly storms. This partnership among trained storm spotters, Emergency Management and the National Weather Service has helped save countless lives.
Anyone who has interest in being an official storm spotter or a general interest in weather is encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact Jennifer Fales, emergency management coordinator, at 816-784-9304.

Home weatherization job training available
The City of Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with the Metropolitan Energy Center and the OAI, Inc., will offer job training in the fields of energy conservation and home weatherization to Kansas City, Mo., residents.
This partnership is a three-year program to train unemployed and underemployed individuals in the Kansas City metropolitan area for careers in environmental remediation and energy conservation. The partnership is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
"Kansas City is well positioned to thrive coming out of the recession. We have new ideas and new business opportunities," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "Since the trend is toward green industries, those companies will be among the most successful, as this program already has demonstrated. If you need a job, if you're looking for an opportunity, I encourage you to explore this opportunity."
The training will begin April 4 and run through May 20, 2011.
Thus far this program has trained 49 individuals and successfully assisted 36 to full time employment.

This year's annual after hours business exchange is Tuesday, March 1 at Alphapointe, 7501 Prospect Ave. The "Tribal Council Reveals the Secrets of Business Survival" seminar takes place from 3:30 to 5pm and will feature a panel of community representatives discussing tips on business longevity.
The seminar is $5/person. Then from 5-7pm, the annual business networking begins featuring lots of refreshments from area food vendors, free display space, door prizes, and a special drawing for luxury box tickets at the Sprint Center! There is a $5/person fee for the networking.
This is a once-a-year metro-wide event with approximately 300 attendees- a super networking opportunity. We hope to see you there!

We are located in the Crossroads Art District and we have five studios available! Graphic Design, Ceramics, Screen Printing, Photography and Visual (Painting/Illustration).
Students must be residents of and attend a Jackson County Missouri High School, have experience in the arts and examples of art work or portfolio for an interview. Our program begins with a 72-hour apprenticeship that can lead to a part-time paid position. City hosts Resume Preparation Seminar
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Civic and Community Engagement, has partnered with DeVry University of Kansas City and the University of Missouri - Kansas City to host a Resume Preparation Seminar on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at Southeast Community Center, 4201 E. 63rd St.
Experts will assist seminar attendees with resume writing and conduct mock interviews. Interested participants must register for the seminar at www.kcmo.org/engagekcand remember to bring their resume to the seminar so sponsors may review and make recommendations.
The City's Office of Civic and Community Engagement has provided similar professional development workshop to more than 7,000 residents in the Kansas City area over the past six years. They have also teamed up with community partners to provide seminars at all high schools in the Kansas City, Mo. School District.
"The seminars are a great example of how we partner with academic institutions to provide educational support outside of the classroom," said Councilwoman Cindy Circo.

Free Chocolate, Giveaways and Health Screenings at Chocolate Crawl
Downtown Lee’s Summit will host its 3rd Annual Chocolate Crawl from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Customers are invited to wear red, and follow the pink and red balloons to free chocolate treats and health screenings while they shop for Valentine’s Day.
Customers should follow the pink balloons to participating stores, where they can enjoy a variety of free chocolate treats and enter to win a Valentine’s Day gift basket filled with products and gift cards. The first 300 customers to visit either A Thyme for Everything (231 SE Main) or The Living Stone (18 SE Third Street) will receive a box filled with coupons from participating stores. The boxes are only available the day of the event.
Downtown Lee’s Summit is also proud to partner with Lee’s Summit Medical Center to offer free health screenings. New to the event this year, the health screenings will include cholesterol, bone density, posture assessment, blood pressure and more. A total of 10 health screening stations will be offered inside participating businesses throughout downtown. These health screenings help celebrate the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, which raises awareness about heart disease. All health screening stations will be marked with red balloons.

KC Zoo: free Family Science Night Feb 3rd

The February 3rd Family Science Night theme is Fantastic Foods. Kids will learn where food comes from, what causes food to spoil or be dangerous to eat, how much food they should be eating, how much food zoo animals need to eat, and more.
There is no registration required. Kids must be accompanied by an adult.
