Urban League of Greater Kansas City KCP&L Utility Assistance
KCP&L Utility Assistance Program
After a very hot summer, many of our customers are struggling with higher than usual utility bills. As part of our Connections program, KCP&L established a Family Relief Fund for eligible families. The program will end October 31, 2012 and we still have funds available. As a leader with one of our community partners, I ask that you help us increase awareness among your clients that may be eligible.
In summary, the Family Relief Fund is set up for lower-income families with a dependent (under 18) living at home. If approved, customers will receive a one-time-only, $150 credit applied to their KCP&L account. We established the fund to assist approximately 3,000 families in our service territory.
Click here to download the application and terms & conditions. Those that may be eligible just need to complete the application, locate the required documentation and mail it directly to the Salvation Army. If approved, the credit will be made to the account. There are other utlity assistance options available with our Connections program and here is the link: http://www.kcplsave.com/ residential/connections/ default.html
Thanks in advance for helping us expand this program. Let me now if you have any questions.

Flu shots
Talk to your doctor. If you have Medicare Part B,
your flu shot should be free. If you have private insurance, you may be
able to get a flu shot either free or for the price of a copay. Even if
you don’t think flu shots are covered by your insurance, ask the billing
department at your doctor’s office to call and find out.
Look for free or low-cost flu clinics or events. Some hospitals or other health care organizations offer flu shot clinics where they will give free or low-cost flu shots to the public on a first-come-first-served basis. For example, the University of Kansas Hospital has a free drive-thru flu shot event every October. Many state or local health departments also offer free flu shot clinics. But keep in mind, you’ll need to get there early and you’ll likely wait in line. To find a flu shot clinic in your area, check your local Living on the Cheap site and your local newspaper, plus search for your local health department online.
Try a drugstore or supermarket. Here are the deals for 2012:
Ask your employer. To cut down on sick days, employers frequently offer flu shots at no cost to their employees. If you’re employed, ask someone in your company’s human resources department if flu shots will be offered this season.
Check with your insurance company. Under the federal Affordable Care Act, all insurance plans that were created after March 23, 2010, are required to provide some types of preventive care, including immunizations, for free beginning September 23, 2012. If you have a new employer, or your employer recently switched insurance plans, call to find out if flu shots are covered.

make a $1 donation for every FREE haircut to The Breast Cancer Research
Foundation (up to $50,000). As the promo says, “It’s our privilege to be
able to help such a deserving group of women feel beautiful.” We could
not have said it better. You can schedule an appointment by either calling or stopping by a participating salon.
No coupon or purchase necessary — just be sure to confirm the offer
when scheduling your appointment. Even though the haircut is FREE,
remember to tip your stylist appropriately. The offer ends October 31.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a good time to consider a
mammogram. The National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends that all
women over 40 get a mammogram every one to two years. If you have
private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, at least part of the cost of
your mammogram should be covered. Under the federal Affordable Health
Care Act, if you have a new health insurance plan or insurance policy
issued after September 23, 2010, and you are over 40, mammograms must be covered with no copayment or obligation to first meet your deductible.
If you’re uninsured or underinsured, Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) is a good time to get a free or low-cost mammogram. Here are some resources that can help.
