Please be cautious of Meat sales from trucks

The City of Kansas City, Mo. cautions residents concerning meat sales door to door. The City's Health Department has been notified that non-licensed vendors have been approaching residents at their homes, offering to sell meat out of the back of an unmarked pick-up truck.

"There are respectable, recognizable organizations and businesses that sell meat door to door," said Bert Malone, manager of the Health Department's Environmental Health Services. "They will be able to provide documentation, such as food permits and business permits."

Meat sold through licensed vendors is maintained at safe temperatures and handled using approved safe food handling techniques, including regular inspections by the City and other regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"In the past, unlicensed vendors have been known to take meat approved only for use in pet foods and sell it to unsuspecting buyers as high quality meat," said Malone. "The buyer should always be aware of the risks when buying from a door-to-door vendor and make sure that the vendor is licensed with the City."
